When Did I Lose the Right to Feel Safe in My Body?

Updated: Feb 9

When did I lose the right to feel safe in my own body? Was it when I received dolls as a child, when my worth was measured by the shape of my body? Was it in school, when girls were forbidden from wearing shorts, but boys could wear them freely? Was it in the army, when uniforms were tailored to fit only female bodies in ways that made us feel uncomfortable? Was it when my brother laughed at me for having body hair, saying I needed to remove it? Maybe it was when my mother, out of concern, told me to cover up because seeing my nipple through my shirt would drive men wild? Was it when men felt entitled to touch me even though my body language said “no”? Or when I went to the beach and saw how women choosing to be topless were ogled and judged? Perhaps it was when I received compliments only after I lost weight, as if my worth was tied to my appearance?

There have been many moments that have brought me to this point, where I can clearly see how my right to feel safe in my own body was taken away.

In a world where my body has been judged, objectified, and constrained by endless expectations, I realized that I have not felt safe in my presence. If I choose to show myself, I’m often perceived as too bold, too sexual, or too provocative, rather than simply existing as I am—natural and free in my body.

But today, I take this right back.I shed the weight of all these messages, the burden society has placed on my shoulders. I refuse to carry it any longer.

I am reclaiming the natural freedom to exist in my body, the freedom of my consciousness, and I’m here to tell you that I am done carrying the weight that is not mine to bear.

And I invite you to join me in shedding this unnecessary weight. To reclaim your natural right to freedom in your body and your mind. Together, we can create a space to explore and form conscious connections in an open, held, and communicated environment. A space where we can open ourselves to the body and senses once more. A space designed to help us return our sovereignty—over our bodies, our choices, and our boundaries.

Come, as you are.
